On-page Optimization: Meta Tags

"Content Type" Meta Tag

This tag doesn't necessarily relate to search engine optimization, but it does indicate the content type for the page, which can have its place and importance.

Proper format for the content-type meta tag:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

Dreamweaver includes this tag as default for a new page, and I've had a problem with getting pages to validate without it - so I include it as a standard practice.
